Senator Wyden "wins big healthcare concession" as his choice proposal to be added to Senate health care bill

Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the Senate's health care reform bill would be amended to include a version of Senator Ron Wyden's "free choice" proposal. The amendment would expand health care coverage to an additional one million Americans, and represents an important step in allowing greater health insurance choice in the reform package.

Senator Wyden released a statement on the proposed amendment:

“As I have long said, empowering Americans to choose the health insurance that works best for them and their family is the single best way to hold health insurance companies accountable,” said Wyden. “While this is just one step in the direction of guaranteeing choices for all Americans, it is a major step because – for the first time – it introduces the concept of individual choice to a marketplace where it has long been foreign. This is a significant step toward real reform.”
