Latest UpdatesSenator Wyden fights for LGBTQ equal rights, at home and across the globeSenator Ron Wyden is taking a stand for equality and is fighting for greater LGBTQ rights and protections. At home, Sen. Wyden is calling for an end to the discriminatory Don't Ask, Don't Tell military policy. As a co-sponsor of this critical anti-discrimination legislation, Wyden believes the time to act is now. "We are here today to say we will not accept waiting any longer," said Wyden at a public press event. Abroad, Sen. Wyden is working to protect gay and lesbian Ugandans from human rights abuses under potential anti-gay legislation working its way through Uganda's parliament. Previously, Wyden, Chairman of Senate Finance Committee’s subcommittee on International Trade, Customs and Global Competitiveness, demanded the U.S. State Department review and potentially alter the country's trade status if the bill were to pass. Thanks to Sen .Wyden, the State Department has responded that they are now looking into the practices of African nations with respect to their LGBTQ populations. Wyden insists upon the seriousness of the situation and the urgency of defending LGBTQ individuals worldwide: “The Ugandan attack on their homosexual population is an offense against human liberty and must be opposed at every opportunity," he said. |
