Senator Wyden and other Senate Democrats are taking a bold stand against unlimited corporate spending in American elections.
In response to the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, Wyden and fellow Senators today proposed requiring CEOs to appear in campaign ads sponored by their corporations and say they "approve" the ad. The creatively-titled "Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections" (DISCLOSE) Act also would impose strict new limits on spending by foreign corporations, recipients of government bailouts, and government contractors.
"I wish Congress didn't have to take action to ensure that a citizen's voice doesn't get buried by new and larger mountains of corporate cash," noted Senator Wyden. "If the Supreme Court wants to treat corporations as individuals then we will hold those entities to the same standards of accountability that we do individuals."
Senator Wyden has a long history of fighting for federal campaign finance reform. He is the original author of the "stand by your ad" requirement that makes candidates for federal office appear in their ads to "approve" the message.
