Ron Wyden: Different. Like Oregon.

Wyden, Senators to Oil Rig Operator Transocean: "Our families deserve better"

Posted in Environment.

Yesterday, Senator Ron Wyden and 17 other Senators had harsh words for Transocean, the company which owns the drilling rig now gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Concerned over Transocean's plan to shortly issue $1 billion in dividends to its shareholders, which could make it more difficult to pursue liability claims against the company, Senator Wyden drafted and sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder.

“We are concerned that such action to quickly move money out of corporate coffers to individual investors may make it more difficult to pursue liability claims against the company,” Wyden wrote in the letter. “Families of those who died in the disaster, the fishing industry that has been devastated by the oil spill and the governments that have worked full-time to clean up this spill deserve better.”

"For a company that said it did nothing wrong, this company is working pretty hard to insulate itself from being held responsible for an accident involving its own drill rig and crew," Wyden further commented.
