Wyden challenges massive cell phone fee hike

Senator Ron Wyden this week is taking on the large increases in termination fees several cell phone companies have adopted in advance of the a new generation of smart phones. Wyden is pushing the Federal Communications Commission to investigate whether the higher fees are being used to pay for advertising and other unrelated costs, as well as undermine consumer choice.
“I don’t believe it is any coincidence that wireless companies like AT&T or Verizon are doubling their fees on the eve of launching the newest generation iPhone or the latest Android OS,” Wyden said. “Customers are being locked in and carriers are limiting competition.”
