This week, the push to end obstructionist secret holds in the U.S. Senate took a major step forward. Senator Ron Wyden joined several of his colleagues at meeting of the Senate Rules & Adminsitration committee and testified on the importance of bringing greater transparency to our government. Momentum for ending secret holds is building as more Senators lend their suport to Senator Wyden.
"For more than a dozen years, Sen. [Chuck] Grassley [R-Iowa] and I -- a Democrat and a Republican -- have sat at tables just like this one, pulling out all the stops to persuade the United States Senate to stop doing public business in secret," said Wyden. “Ending secret holds will take a weapon out of the hands of lobbyists."
People across the nation are taking notice of Senator Wyden's work. "Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden has been trying to end the practice for more than a dozen years" noted NPR in their story. The Hill also took note of Senator Wyden's "challenging his fellow lawmakers to put an end to the use of secret holds in the Senate."
With the end of secret holds in sight, Senator Wyden will keep pushing until the job is done.
