This is a disaster waiting to happen.
If a train carrying thousands of gallons of crude oil was barreling through your backyard, you’d want to know every precaution was taken to prevent an accident, right?
Unfortunately, that isn’t happening.
Last year, we called on the Department of Transportation to require new safety measures, but the new rules they just introduced do little to incentivize the phase-out of old, unsafe rail cars that put the environment and public safety at risk.
Here in Oregon, tens of thousands of rail cars pass through Oregon every year carrying hazardous materials, like oil, much of it through environmentally-sensitive areas like the Columbia River Gorge.
Like you, I want be assured that these trains are top-of-the-line, with every precaution put in place to prevent a spill or an accident. But that’s not what we have today.
It’s time to change that, but I can’t do it alone. Add your name and tell Congress to pass the bill!
