Pursuing an education shouldn’t cost you your future

Like so many of you, I am deeply disappointed in the recent ruling by the Supreme Court to strike down President Biden's relief plan for the millions of Americans drowning in student loan debt.

Americans owe an incomprehensible $1.75 trillion dollars in student loans. Student loans remain a singular, defining roadblock to social mobility, getting out of poverty, saving for the future, and securing a dignified retirement.

Here's what I believe: pursuing an education shouldn't come at the cost of your financial future. This ruling by the Supreme Court will force millions of Americans to make the impossible choice between covering everyday expenses like rent and groceries, and paying off their student loans.

This is another card in the deck that is stacked against working families while the wealthy and well-connected continue to get richer. Long gone are the days when middle-income Americans could count on being able to buy a home, a car, and save for retirement, and this will only serve to perpetuate that disparity.

Our country has locked multiple generations of folks into financial handcuffs, denying them the opportunity to enjoy retirement with their grandchildren, families, and loved ones, which Americans could once count on.

With this latest ruling, the far-right justices on the Supreme Court have perpetuated a deeply-broken system that continues to lock working families out of a secure future while propping up the wealthy.

We have to attack this problem from every angle: keeping the cost of tuition down, simplifying the repayment process, and moving forward to improve other debt relief measures not struck down. I've long supported efforts to help working families struggling under the crushing weight of student debt, and I'm not stopping now. I'm redoubling my efforts to help this movement.

Because no American should be saddled with lifelong debt for pursuing an education. That's not the American dream.

More soon,

Ron
