Food insecurity is at its highest this time of year
Every year, millions of seniors across America face the threat of hunger. And in the winter, food insecurity is often at its highest. So it's going to take all of us stepping up to make sure they get through this season.
Recently, Donald Trump used food assistance funding as a political weapon, forcing millions of Americans to question where their next meal would come from. Food banks and programs like Meals on Wheels filled a crucial gap during Trump's government shutdown, ensuring families, kids, and seniors had enough to eat.
The volunteers at Meals on Wheels in Portland and nationwide are doing the hard work day in and day out to ensure seniors have food on the table, especially during the holidays.
But Meals on Wheels is underfunded. Eighty percent of low-income, food-insecure seniors are not receiving the home-delivered meals they need.
And this year, there are even greater needs they must account for – especially in the wake of the recent cuts to SNAP and other programs that folks have relied on to access food.
So today, our seniors need all of us.
A hot meal in tough times is about more than just food on the table – it's a life-saving dignity and a connection to the community that we must not overlook.
Seniors in our community, our neighbors in their golden years, are going hungry right now. I'm calling on all of us to support people who have already given us so much. Chip in today to Meals on Wheels People, and let's keep our seniors afloat during this difficult time.
Onward,
Ron
