Trump’s reckless deployment of federal agents has put lives in danger
For months, Portlanders have felt intimidated by the troops and federal agents deployed on our streets by the Trump administration. I said from the start that Trump's reckless actions to instill fear would only put lives in danger.
Our community is reeling from the news this past week of two people shot by federal law enforcement, just hours after the entire country grappled with the horrific killing of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis by ICE agents.
Trump's federal agents are out of control. We need them off our streets. Anyone involved in these shootings must be investigated by state and local authorities – because Trump officials have made clear they care more about advancing their pre-written narratives than public safety and accountability.
I have already introduced legislation requiring the unmasking of the federal agents who have been intimidating people and violating due process. I will keep demanding answers and oversight as more facts become known in the days ahead about these tragedies.
We all deserve the peace of mind to know we can walk home without masked agents sweeping us up at a moment's notice with no due process. We don't deserve to live in fear of being shot because we question a federal agent. We must bring an end to the terror the Trump administration is deliberately instilling.
More soon,
Ron
