Trump’s latest voter suppression move
On Tuesday, Trump issued his latest executive order designed to limit access to mail-in voting for this year's midterm elections.
Trump's unconstitutional order is voter suppression, plain and simple. It would direct the DHS and Social Security Administration to make a list of eligible voters in each state, and have a say over who is able to vote by mail.
Let's call this out for what it is: a last-ditch effort by a president with cratering approval ratings to rig the vote before the American people deliver a verdict on his cuts to health care, his war of choice with Iran, his tariffs that have driven the cost of living higher, and his covering up of the Epstein files.
Oregon has been voting by mail for over thirty years. It's safe, easy, and effective. Mail-in voting has fewer instances of fraud than any other method of voting, and for many seniors, disabled folks, and rural Americans, it is the only way they're able to make their voices heard in our Democratic process.
Oregon is already preparing to sue the Trump administration over this executive order (which is blatantly unconstitutional – presidents don't get to set the standards of state elections on a whim). I am confident that Trump's order will be swiftly overturned in federal court, just as previous ones were.
But we cannot let up in the fight to protect our access to the ballot box. We must stay vigilant, because I can guarantee that Trump has a lot more "tricks" up his sleeve these next 7 months that he thinks will sow enough chaos and confusion to impact November's election. I was the first U.S. Senator elected entirely by mail. I will use my platform at every turn to make sure that none of these voter suppression tactics succeed.
Onward,
Ron
