UCC Strong

One year ago today lives were tragically altered and cut short on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

The mass shooting at UCC broke our hearts. It was a horrific, unthinkable tragedy. The families, friends, classmates, and neighbors of the victims have been in my thoughts throughout the past year, and I know that is true for many other Oregonians.

I saw firsthand again this week when I visited with students, faculty and staff the amazing resilience of UCC and the entire Roseburg community. They are truly UCC Strong. Yet, the trauma of that terrible day one year ago doesn’t really go away. It remains present, especially on this difficult day.

The movement to pass common sense gun safety reforms is growing. Americans are fed up with the inaction in Congress, including many members of Congress like me. We need to keep up the pressure. It is unconscionable that we do nothing as the long list of tragic mass shootings like the one at UCC grows and more precious lives are cut short.

Thank you for keeping the Roseburg community in your thoughts today – and thank you for standing with me in the fight for common sense reforms to keep our communities safe from gun violence.
