This shouldn't be controversial. Or even political.

Taking back our democracy from those that wish to undermine Americans' fundamental constitutional rights will take work on several fronts: tightening election security, ending voter suppression, making the vote more accessible to everyone who's eligible, combating coordinated disinformation, and more.

All of those steps, though, rely on the fundamental promise of democracy: that each and every person who calls this country home is represented equally in our government.

So, let's talk about the people living in Washington D.C., because they are very specifically not receiving equal levels of representation in Congress.

Washington D.C. must become our nation's next state. It's just that simple. Because, as absurd as it seems, the residents of our nation's capital home aren't represented in either house of Congress.

That's unacceptable. Add your name to tell Congress "Equal representation for all! Make Washington D.C. a state, now!"

I'm attempting to right this wrong with my fellow Senate Democrats. And that's why we've introduced legislation to make Washington D.C. our country's 51st state.

Equal representation shouldn't be controversial or political. Here's the issue: Congressional Republicans are afraid that more representation will mean them winning fewer elections. But instead of reaching out to those voters, Republican leadership is fighting to keep them from voting.

If you're thinking "That's disgraceful," I agree with you. And we need to make things right.

Sign my petition to give DC residents the equal representation they're owed.

Because an injury to one is an injury to all in our democracy. Equal representation must be at the heart of who we are as a country.

Stay tuned. I look forward to bringing more about this to you in the coming weeks and months, and letting you know how we can get this done — together.
