I refuse to play Trump’s zero-sum game
To me, a budget's far more than lists and charts of numbers; it's a moral document — because what you choose to prioritize shows what you really care about.
Trump gave us some insight into his thought process earlier this month at a private lunch with his supporters where he told them, "We can't take care of daycare. We're a big country. We're fighting wars. It's not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these things."
He certainly showcased that callous mindset when he released his budget proposal. Here's a taste of the priorities in it: Removing funds for life-saving health research, disease prevention, and clean water Cutting yet more money from FEMA and weather monitoring systems for wildfires, floods, hurricanes, you name it Ending HUD initiatives focused on growing our affordable housing supply Slashing billions more from public schools, youth vocational training, and college
All of this (and more cuts) to offset the massive hike in military spending that Trump claims we need in the wake of the war he started with Iran.
Imagine that: drawing us into a conflict we never asked for, and then forcing the American people to play a cruel zero-sum game.
Well, I refuse to play that game.
I stand for a fair budget — one that doesn't force us to choose between which essential programs for healthcare, education, or working families we can save.
Onward,
Ron
